Dental care is essential for your overall health and wellness, and dental insurance is how most people access that care. As with other insurances, dental insurance can be confusing—and unfortunately, that confusion can keep patients from visiting the dentist.

At Rio Grande Family Dental, we understand that many barriers can make it difficult to get quality dental care. We do our best to remove those barriers. In addition to our convenient hours, we accept dental insurance from all major providers, including Delta Dental, Humana, and Cigna.

We also make your insurance easy to understand and use. Our team is happy to answer any questions about your coverage and will help you maximize your plan so you pay as little as possible for your care.

What Is Dental Insurance & How Does It Work?

Dental insurance can be confusing, but it’s a valuable tool for keeping dental care affordable. Most patients receive insurance through their employer, who may cover part of the cost, making it even more affordable.

Essentially, patients with dental insurance pay a set monthly premium to stay enrolled, and in return, receive free or discounted dental services depending on their specific plan. Most plans cover preventive care at 100%—including two cleanings per year, exams, and x-rays. Basic care and major procedures are covered at different percentages, with patients paying more for major treatments.

In-Network vs. Out-of-Network

Many patients are unsure what “in-network” and “out-of-network” mean when it comes to dental insurance. While “out-of-network” may sound like your insurance won’t apply, that’s not always true—it depends on the type of plan you have.

HMO Plans

HMO plans only cover services performed by dentists within their network, and referrals to specialists must come from your primary dentist. If you have an HMO plan, make sure to choose a dentist who participates in that network.

PPO Plans

PPO plans are more flexible. When a dental office is in-network with a PPO provider, it means there’s an agreement that allows patients to pay a smaller portion of treatment costs. However, even if your dentist is out-of-network, costs are often still very reasonable.

We Accept All Major Insurance

Once you’re enrolled, using your dental insurance is simple—just choose a dentist and schedule an appointment! At Rio Grande Family Dental, we accept all major insurance providers, so you can feel confident your insurance will work here.
